Following their excellent results Emma-Louise Donald and Hannah MacKay have been selected for the Scottish Team competing at the British Finals in their individual categories. Both girls will travel to Birmingham for the event on the 29th/30th April.

Neither of the girls are a stranger to high-level British competitions. For Emma-Louise (15) who lives near Oldmeldrum this will be the second year she has represented Scotland at this event and her fourth time in total.

This is Hannah’s, (11) from Ellon, first time at representing Scotland at Club Grades but in the last 6 months she has represented Scotland at the Voluntary 2 Championships and British Schools Championships. Both girls are training hard for the event and aim to improve on their performance from the qualifying event.

SCOTTISH GYMNASTICS SQUAD TRAILS

Two gymnasts from Garioch Gymnastics Club based in Inverurie were recently successful in gaining a place in Scottish National squads.

The intensive and demanding trials took place in Edinburgh in January and tested the girls level and repertoire of skills on each piece of apparatus - Asymmetric Bars, Balance Beam, Floor and Vault as well as their overall body strength, power and flexibility.

There are 3 levels of squad in Scotland –

Development Squad - for those who are younger or at a development stage of gymnastics.

Performance Squad – for those able enough to represent their country and have reached a mature level of gymnastics.

Elite Squad – for a very small number of gymnasts, generally older, who are representing the country at major international events i.e. the Commonwealth Games.

Jessie Smith (9) from Collieston was successful in gaining a place in the Regional Development Squad. On top of her 4-5 days a week she currently trains Jessie will attend training in either Cumbernauld or Auchterarder one day a month. This is Jessie’s 2nd year in the squad and she is looking forward to continuing to improve her skills and give 100% to her training. Training will be under the leadership of Chris Adams (Scottish Regional Development Squad Coach) and her own coach Janine Lloyd who is also the lead coach for the North Regional Development squad.

Hannah MacKay (11) from Ellon impressed the judges at the trials enough to be selected for the Performance squad. She is the only gymnast from the whole of the North of Scotland to have gained a place in this squad and she realizes how lucky she is but knows the hard work really starts here. Hannah was a member of the Regional development squad last year but worked hard to move up and is now one of the top gymnasts in the country for her age.

Selection for the squad means that Hannah will have to travel once a month to the National Sports Centre in Largs where she will undergo an intensive training weekend under the leadership of Scottish National coach Christine Still. She will also have the opportunity to attend the development squad training one day a month at various venues throughout Scotland. As Hannah does not train in a purpose built gymnastics facility she has to take all the opportunities she can to train in better venues.

Hannah has also been selected as a member of the Scottish team to compete at the British Schools Championships in Newcastle in March. Selection was based on previous competition scores from last year. This is a tremendous opportunity for Hannah and not only is she the only gymnast from the North of Scotland to be selected but also the first.

Level 4, 9 year old championships
&
Level 2, 11 year old championships

November Guildford

Hannah MacKay (11) and Jessie Smith (9)

Jessie Smith (9) from Collieston and Hannah MacKay (11) from Ellon thoroughly enjoyed the experience of competing against the best gymnasts in Britain. Both girls performed extremely well and made Scotland and their gymnastics club proud.

Hannah had a very good competition and managed to improve her qualifying score and be the top scoring gymnast in the Scottish team. Considering she qualified in 3rd place this was a remarkable achievement.

As a result of doing so well in the competition Hannah MacKay (11, from Ellon) and Jessie Smith (9, from Collieston) have been asked to represent Scotland at the British Finals of their respective Levels in Guildford on the 5th/6th November.

This is an amazing achievement for the girls and the club.  The Voluntary Level rules allow the gymnasts to show their huge range of difficulty and skill level and therefore is one of the most demanding British competitions.

The girls will be competing against the best 9 and 11 year olds in Britain.  They are first gymnasts from Garioch to represent Scotland at this event and Hannah is the first gymnast from the North of Scotland to represent the country at Level 2.

Garioch Gymnastics Club has now achieved a record 7 gymnasts from the club to represent Scotland this year.  In April and May of this year 5 gymnasts ®¢ Rosie Jones, Miree McCourt, Emily Bull, Emma-Louise Donald and Katy Fern travelled to Kettering and Birmingham to compete for Scotland in the Club Grade 2, Voluntary 1 and Compulsory Level 4 British Finals.

Garioch Gymnastics Club is continually going from strength to strength, they are now the only major club in Scotland not training in a purpose built facility.  To have achieved 7 Scotland representatives in one year when still training in a multi purpose gym where the equipment has to be set out 4 times a week is a tremendous success.

However, the club feel that to continue with this success and to build on it they must have a facility where equipment can be left up all the time that they have 24 hour access to.

If anyone can help in achieving this goal or is willing to help sponsor the girls attend the British Voluntary Levels Finals please contact Janine Lloyd on (01467) 628809.

Getting ready for my "gap year" in Peru next year (website www.kirstentoperu.bravehost.com

All at the club wish Kirsten all the very best for the trip and look forward to having her back with the club if we can. Kirsten has been invaluable as a gymnast and more recently as a coach for the club.
