GARIOCH GYMNASTICS CLUB
APRIL 2007
Several of the coaches at the club passed their assistant coaching exam at Garioch on Saturday 14th April. Thanks to all the gymnasts who helped out as guinea pigs on the day. Congratulations to coaches: Rosie Jones, Allyson King, Alison Mitchell, Susan Morrison, Iona Rendall, Jenny Swan
Following excellent results at the Club Grade 6 competition on Saturday 21st April 2007, 5 of the clubs gymnasts were invited to trial for the National 8 year old squad. Daniella Nanova, an ex-Olympic Rhythmic gymnast, runs the squad in Largs on one Friday a month. Her role is to prepare the young gymnasts for the Elite Compulsory Levels Grades, which these gymnasts will be eligible for in March 2008. Garioch Gymnastics Club entered 5 gymnasts in the Club Grade 6 competition and all 5 – Emily Patterson, Ashley Mitchell, Imogen Hilton, Joanne Lowe and Lauryn Grant scored high enough to be invited to the trial, which was held on Friday 27th April in Largs. We await the results with anticipation.
Four of the clubs current and ex-gymnasts took their club judge exam in Perth on Sunday 22nd April and PASSED. Emma-Louise Donald, Jenny Swan, Laura Cruickshank and Jennifer Bruce took the exam following the course in January and the club are very pleased to have more judges. You can never have enough!
Gymnasts - Jemma Ferguson, Catherine Amos, Hannah MacKay and Head Coach Janine Lloyd travelled down to Birmingham for the Club Grades British Finals on the 28th/29th April. The gymnasts were representing Scotland at the event and all the girls performed exceptionally well in what was a very tough competition. Although no medals were won the Scottish teams did themselves proud and are moving up the ranks against the traditionally better English regions. Nice to see quite a few parents down cheering the girls on with their Saltires and banners as well!

CLUB GRADES BRITISH FINALS

Hannah MacKay (13, from Ellon), Catherine Amos (12, from Fyvie) and Jemma Ferguson (11, from Torphins) all qualified to represent Scotland at the British Finals of their respective events on the 28th/29th April in Birmingham. The girls will travel with Garioch’s head coach – Janine Lloyd to the event. For Jemma and Catherine this will be their first Scottish representative competition but will have Hannah on hand to reassure them, as this is the 4th time she has represented her country in gymnastics.
As you can imagine all of this does not come cheap. Training up to 5 days a week throughout the year (the club only really stop at Christmas for holidays) already costs the parents a small fortune. Adding in these extra costs and Scottish squad training for Hannah and Jemma means the parents have to pay out a significant amount over the year. If anyone is willing to help sponsor the girls to attend the competition (any amount no matter how small would be appreciated) please contact Janine Lloyd on 01467 628809.
In addition to this the club are also trying to secure their own building, which can be permanently set up as a gymnastics facility. With the amount of children currently taking part in gymnastics in and around Inverurie, the huge waiting list the club holds and with all the ongoing successes of the competitive gymnasts the club desperately need a permanent facility to maintain and build on these successes and allow more children to take part in the sport at all levels. Again, if anyone can help please contact Janine Lloyd.

SCOTTISH GYMNASTICS SQUAD TRAILS
Five gymnasts from Garioch Gymnastics Club based in Inverurie were recently successful in gaining a place in Scottish National squads. The intensive and demanding trials took place in Edinburgh in January and tested the girls level and repertoire of skills on each piece of apparatus - Asymmetric Bars, Balance Beam, Floor and Vault as well as their overall body strength, power and flexibility.
There are 3 levels of squad in Scotland–
Development Squad - for those who are younger or at a development stage of gymnastics.
Junior/Senior Squad – for those able enough to represent their country or have reached (or look to have the potential to reach) a high level of gymnastics.
Elite Squad – for a very small number of gymnasts, generally older, who are representing the country at major international events i.e. the Commonwealth Games.
Jessie Smith (11) from Collieston impressed the judges at the trials enough to be selected for the Junior squad. She is the youngest gymnast from the North of Scotland to have gained a place in this squad and she realises how lucky she is but knows the hard work really starts here. Jessie has been a member of the Regional development squad for the last 2 years but has worked hard to move up and is now one of the top gymnasts in the country for her age.
Selection for the squad means that Jessie will have to travel with her coach, Janine Lloyd, once a month to the National Sports Centre in Largs where she will undergo an intensive training weekend under the leadership of the Scottish National Coach. She will also have the opportunity to attend the development squad training one day a month at various venues throughout Scotland. As Jessie does not train in a purpose built gymnastics facility she has to take all the opportunities she can to train in better venues. All of this is on top of the 4-5 days/evenings a week she currently trains at Garioch Gymnastics club.
Jessie is also one of a select few picked to work with the newly appointed Scottish National Youth Coach during the week. This will mean regular trips down to the central belt after school to work with other squad members, she will have increased access to top level coaching as well as the backing of nutritionists and physios etc.
Four gymnasts were successful in gaining a place in the Regional Development Squad – Hannah Mackay (13) from Ellon, Jemma Ferguson (11) from Torphins, Kerry Smith (9) from Collieston (Jessie’s little sister) and Ashleigh Thompson (9) from Mintlaw. On top of the 4-5 days a week they currently train the girls will attend training in either Cumbernauld or Auchterarder one day a month. Training will be under the leadership of the new National Youth Coach and Garioch Gymnastics Head Coach Janine Lloyd who is also the lead coach for the North Regional Development squad. For the three younger girls this is there first year in National squads and are excited about the prospect.
Garioch Gymnastics club would like to congratulate the girls and getting in and say well done for their hard work, determination and effort to get there.
As you can imagine all of this does not come cheap. Training up to 5 days a week throughout the year (the club only really stop at Christmas for holidays) already costs the parents a small fortune. Adding in these monthly squad costs the parents will have to pay out a significant amount over the year. If anyone is willing to help sponsor the girls to attend the squads (any amount no matter how small would be appreciated) please contact Janine Lloyd on 01467 628809.
In addition to this the club are also trying to secure their own building, which can be permanently set up as a gymnastics facility. MAY 2007
The Garioch team that travelled to Perth for the Level 5 Team comp took home a SILVER Team medal and several individual apparatus medals. Congratulations to Kimberley Pratt, Catherine Amos, Lee-Ann Donald, Rachel Kennard, Rebecca Bruce, Alana Cowie, Catriona Sweeney and Nicole Quirie on their success.
Thanks to Emma-Louise Donald, Lee-Ann Donald, Jessie Smith and Kerry Smith who helped head coach, Janine Lloyd run an In-service for P.E. Teachers on their precious day off school. They were very useful and their talents suitably impressed all the teachers.
Congratulations to Emily Patterson and Ashley Mitchell who were both successful in gaining a place in the Scottish Squad for 8 year olds run by ex-Olympic Rhythmic Gymnast Daniella Nanaova. They are the only gymnasts from the North East in the group and inclusions requires them to travel once a month to Largs for training on a Friday afternoon. Although, it is hard work for the girls the training is well worth it.

Carol Donald, Alison Mitchell, Suzanne Ross (Insch), Denise Redfern (Kintore) = Scottish Gymnastics Foundation Leader.
Several of the gymnasts from Garioch Gymnastics Club attended a Summer camp in Largs in July. All the girls had a great time socially and in the gym with many achieving new skills. The girls travelled down with Garioch coaches Trish Swan and Janine Lloyd, who were staff coaches for the event. Those who attended were Emma-Louise Donald, Hannah MacKay, Jennifer Swan, Kimberley Pratt, Catherine Amos, Rachel Kennard, Jessie Smith, Kerry Smith, Catriona Sweeney and Nicole Quirie.
During the Largs summer camp senior elite gymnast Jennifer Swan decided to retire from gymnastics. Jen has devoted many years to gymnastics and the Garioch club. Everyone wishes her the best in her retirement. She is however, not going to be a stranger to the club. Jen has already started coaching and is doing a marvellous job working with some of the younger gymnasts.
It was a busy summer for Hannah MacKay, Jessie Smith and Kerry Smith who also attended the National squad training camps in Largs in August. Also in attendance was head coach Janine Lloyd.
SEPTEMBER/ OCTOBER 2007

Although not necessarily part of the Garioch Club, the group have several members from our club and is coaches and choreographed by one of our club coaches Emily Bull. The girls performed exceptionally well and our now looking forward to their next display in May.
The 2-piece girls performed exceptionally well at the Leven Beginners at the end of September. The club picked up team and individual medals in every age group with notable success to the 8/8s where Imogen Hilton and Emily Patterson won Gold and Silver Overall respectively and the A and B teams won joint GOLD Team. Well done to all the girls who took part, you did us proud!!!!!
Several new coaches at the club took part in their first Assistant coaching course held at Garioch in October. They will now spend the next few months going through a mentoring process before their exams sometime next year.

NOVEMBER/ DECEMBER 2007
Congratulations to all the girls who have competed this month, full results are on the results page. Several medals have come Garioch’s way this month with special mention to Taylor Thomson (SILVER Overall) and Laura Duthie (GOLD Overall) at the Scottish Beginners at the end of November.
We say a sad goodbye to Katy Fern this month. Katy has been a member of the club for 6 years and a successful member of the senior elite group. She was club Junior Champion in 1996 and represented Scotland at the British Finals of the Compulsory 4 championships. Katy’s family are moving to Spain so we wish her well over there with whatever she decides to do and hope they have a big enough house for us all to come and visit when it gets too cold for Scotland. Good Luck!
Several of the club members from the petite elite, Novice and recreational sections took part in their first ever competition. Aberdeenshire Council’s Gymnastics & Trampoline Festival is designed as a fun first time competition and our girls and boys did outstandingly well at the event.
